The blonde one in the pics just looks fantastic. I can only imagine that the tone to be typical Collings superlative as well as the fit & finish.
Anyone play one at NAMM?

There are three kinds of people: those of us that are good at math and those that are not.
I want one. Hopefully some f and varnished models are to follow.

Those do look very nice. At first I thought the soundhole was a little on the large side, but it's growing on me. Now they need to make one like the MT.

looks like the fingerboard is elevated from the body... could be a pretty punchy sounding unit... i'm sure bc got it "tuned up" before putting it on the market... here's hopin'!
Hat's off and cheers to Collings
These mandolins are beauty's for sure. I would like to get a chance to try one of these out one day.
I just have a curiousity...
...is it me or does it seem lately that there is a lot of interest in Oval A's? ....and more interest than I've seen before?
...and if so, what is driving this new interest in the marketplace?
Inquiring minds would like to know

looks sweet. as it would likely be a second or special occasion instrument for me and likely others, i'd love to see a more affordable mt model.
Great Morning eye candy.

I think it matches the growing interest in Irish and old timey music.

Looks like they have a 13th fret neck joint, thats kinda odd isnt it? Kinda a midway point between a classic short neck and a modern long neck?
I would be curious how the body volume (as in cubic inches) compares to other designs.
Sure is purdy though...
Gotta start sometime, might as well be now...
Absolutely. I also think it has to do with the fact that some of the newer ovals are better "crossover" instruments than older ones. Some of them actually have good chop and volume. Another factor I find is that in a big jam, I can hear myself better with an oval, even though it may not actually be louder than a comparable F-hole. I also find them much more satisfying to play solo. So I think more and more people are starting to think of ovals as possible "only mandolin" or "one best mandolin" choices, instead of just "second mandolin" choices. I also think that Mike Compton getting a new Gil oval and playing it a lot in concert might have had some effect on the market.Originally Posted by
Sorry folks, but I'm going to remove a few comments above. Seems we've gotten seriously off-track here with the discussion. There are a lot of people with an interest in this new instrument. Take the other stuff off-line or talk to each other privately, please.
Thank you Scott, since I am excited about this mandolin. I plan to purchuse one this year.I can't wait to hear how it sounds.Originally Posted by (Scott Tichenor @ July 28 2008, 16:33)
I am hoping to play one this week or next when it comes into Elderly.

Elderly may not be getting one in until this fall. I sent them an email this morning with that very question. Brandon Foote replied "Hopefully sometime this fall".
Has anyone seen one of these with a pickguard?

I just got a blacktop oval Collings MT2 last week...amazing tone and great workmanship, as expected. Will try to post some photos soon.
Got to try the new Collings oval at Fiddlers Green yesterday. Very nice tone, warm and woody, great volume and sustain.
