Here is the story behind the mandolin from Marty.
"Well, I'd saved my money to buy that mandolin when I got a job with Lester Flatt, and it was $650. For years, I was real proud of the fact that it never had a scratch on it. It looked like a brand new instrument for probably 12 or 13 years. When I got a job with Johnny Cash, he got on a kick of wanting me to teach him how to play the mandolin. And he was a horrible mandolin player. He'd take my mandolin on the stage and just play along with June Carter when she was singin'. One night I looked over there and he had his pocketknife out and scratched a huge cross on it and put his initials, "JRC," on it and then flipped the mandolin over and autographed it and signed, "Johnny Cash." My heart fell. After the show, I said, "What did you do that for?" and he said, "I didn't want you to forget the Lord." And I told him I could have remembered the Lord without him wrecking my mandolin. But it was all in good fun. And that started a trend after that. People just felt compelled to sign the mandolin. It has Stephen King, President Clinton, Bob Dylan, Billy Bob Thornton, Chuck Berry, Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole, ex-girlfriends, my momma and a lot of people I don't know on there. I'm about to run out of places for people to sign."

Welcome. Nice pics of Marty's mandolin! Where did you find them? Marty Stuart is just an all around great guy IMO -- never miss his Saturday night show on RFD TV.
That mandolin looks very "distressed" for certain. I was a big Johnny Cash fan as well but he had to have been and arrogant A.H. to do that to someone else's property especially when that other person is your employee.
But today Marty is probably thinking differently about it!

Due to current budgetary restrictions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off -- sorry about the inconvenience.
thanks for the info
my brother took them november 11 when marty played the one world theater in austin texas. and thanks for the welcome
i also have this video clip of marty's mandolin, i got to look at it and hold it when marty and the boys played gruene hall back in april. if you pause during the camera flash you can see it real good
So, what we're saying here is that Johny Cash started the whole "distress your mandolin" trend. I had no idea he was that far ahead of his time. It's probably done in a more sophisticated manner these days (though I'm no expert).
Big Mon started the distressing trend.

Anbody trying to sign either of mine would be sorely distressed. Regardless of whether it was Johnny Cash or not,the act was sheer vandalism (IMHO). If it had been any old 'Joe shmo',i think that Marty would have mangled the culprit. From Larry - "But it was all in good fun". Oh Yeah !!!!!. I'd love to have known Marty's first thoughts Larry - they'd possibly get you banned from the 'Cafe for life,
