Default Syncing Audio and Video on cameras/phones - no mando content

Sooo.... I have a question for the mando-masses..

From time to time I find myself recording myself (or others) and uploading it to youtube (or artistworks). As you all know, the sound quality on an iPhone or Canon Rebel is pretty weak.

Does anyone have any good mic suggestions for either device (preferably the canon rebel)? Ill give you an idea of what I currently have at my disposal:

-IPhone, Ipad, and/or Canon Rebel (with video)
-variety of condenser and other microphones and PA, etc.
-Focusrite Scarlett (usb interface for microphones/guitars to the computer).
    -Tascam audio recordeer

I have in the past (a few times) recorded with the Tascam and the canon at the same time, then using Audacity synced the two together. it is kind of a pain, so I am hoping for a quicker/easier solution.

any suggestions? how do yall do it out there in internet-land?

If you are on a Mac, Final Cut Pro X has this built in.

Alternatively there is standalone software such as Plural Eyes:

    or Woowave Dreamsync:

None of these are exactly cheap, but they are fast, easy and accurate.

I don't use that camera (Canon Rebel), but as far as I know it offers no external audio input at all - which is a massive drawback, as with many cameras that do, you can vastly improve the onboard audio by simply using a good quality external mic.

So a separate recorder + sync would appear to be your best (only option) with that camera.

There are various external audio options for iPhone so you may be better going that route.

The tried & tested method is to use a clapperboard to make matching it up easy.

So, are you talking about multi-tracking or just recording yourself playing the mandolin?

I do the latter all the time and would hate to mess around with syncing.

I have used the very affordable "Debut Video Capture Software" for a while now.

I use Focusrite Scarlett and a condenser mic. The software lets you choose your video (webcam) and audio (Focusrite) sources.
I have recorded videos for our Song-a-Week Social Group with that setup. You can hear an example here:
