My favorite: Duffy in introducing Mike Auldridge on stage:
"He's to the Dobro what Hunt's is to ketchup".
I seem to recall I laughed a little harder than was probably appropriate.

That's one of the best, most well-rounded line-ups I've seen locally in a long time. This Maryland boy's gotta find a way to get there. What a nice early Christmas present!
One thing that has helped me a bit in this area is throwing all my CD's on an iPod (this can take a while with a sizable collection) and playing it in "shuffle" mode frequently. It has been...
Great choice, Karen - I was always impressed by the responsiveness of that Phoenix we got to play at camp oh those many years ago.. May you need another refret soon (just not too soon)! Take care.

I use them frequently in a church praise music setting, as the more resonant, "ringing" tone fits exceptionally well.
It's working for me, so far! I think it has a happy home for a while to come. Thanks, Karen and Steve! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'be been using the Octava 012 for quite a while as well... very reasonable price and does the job for me.
I play mine here and there, but not for BG... it's very hard to play BG Dobro well. What tends to sound quite nice is the Dobro in acoustic folk or church music settings. Just tasteful fills and...
I'm playing "A Place in The Heart" tomorrow at my Niece's wedding. #It really is a beautiful and very playable #tune (with a suitable name for a wedding). #There is a beautiful example of Scott T.'s...
I, too, have developed a deep love for the Dunlop Ultex 1.14. I also use Ted's Proplecs here and there when I'm looking for a "smoother" sound. The Ultex for me seems to have the best balance of...
Yeah, I was surpised to spend $54 last week, including insurance - this was for an OM rather than a mando, but still higher than I expected. #Gas IS still up, I suppose (cheaper than driving it...
OK, now I'm starting to feel a LITTLE less guilty about badgering the Tril away from you (but just a little).
Looks like that one will be a keeper! Can't wait to hear it.
For those in the Baltimore/D.C. area who might be interested, Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein (ex-Chesapeake, Seldom Scene) are playing an intimate little show at the Phoenix on Main Street in...

1 - Collings MT
2 - Morgan Monroe MMA-1
3 - Weber Sage #1 Zook/OM
Also a Morgan Monroe Dobro (great fun) and a piece o' #### Ovation plastic acoustic.
I thought you HATED slotted headstocks?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
(OK... it's not totally slotted, but it does have that appearance)......
In simple terms, I kinda view its future like Celtic music today:
- It's basically an "Ancient Tone" music (that inspired BG, anyway).
- It lives on in a flat-lined sense.
- A certain proportion...
Absolutely. FWIW, I have one and ran J74's on them the first several changes. They sound great, but lasting only 3 weeks was getting to me. I have been using EXP74's more recently, and I don't like...
I've played guitar about 25 years, but there are about 8 players at my church. As soon as I picked up the mando, I was instantly the best player there!
I love having a low bar set for me...
If I'm not mistaken, I believe they come with J74's.
I have one of each, and my experience is summed up as follows (some of which is echoed above):
1) Flat - seems to work better for me with all the barre-related stuff I do at church; my hand seems...
Any other users of this book? I was planning to finally get it this week, but I would like others' experiences as to how it helped them. In my brief scan through it, it looked like it was more "tune...
In my experience, as well as those of several others here, the mahogany version is noticeably more "subdued". If you're interested in bluegrass long term, and you don't want to make a mistake, your...
You guys are so great... I knew I could count on you! I learned a lot from both posts, and ended up using the ADAD w/capo at 2. Gave me exactly the drone I was looking for, and it sounded great with...
Looking for some more experienced help! I have to play my OM for the first time in church this Sunday. It's a very simple tune in the Key of E, with A and B chords as part of the progression.
I...
