Anyone ever heard of this alternate tuning for the mandolin? I know there are alternate tunings for the mandolin, but this was new to me.

That tuning is great for D tunes, obviously. I play Angeline the Baker, Bonaparte's Retreat and Post Oak Grove in it.
I am still waiting for that superfast capo to support DDDD tuning
the world is better off without bad ideas, good ideas are better off without the world
I like it on fiddle now and then, "Bonaparte's Retreat" and Tommy Jarrell's version of "Boll Weevil," and it's a fun one to just noodle with. I've never used it on mandolin.
"Be kind to the band; they never get to dance"
That looks good and drone-y, need to try it. I take it the G course and E course are both dropped down to D.
Midnight on the Water is a beautiful waltz usually played in that tuning.
I never tried that tuning on mandolin but on fiddle you don't usually finger that low D string but use it more as a drone.
