I'd love to hear some background on this mandolin and why its that price. I don't know enough to understand. It is a beautiful instrument though. Love the inlay and the bat.

I looked at the description briefly, and other than the headstock inlay, it wasn't immediately obvious to me what else makes this one of a kind. I don't recall seeing too many Nugget for sale in the recent past, but the few that came up seemed to be going for around $10K. So this one must be trebly special...

Not as low as $10K for quite a while, over 10 years ago maybe..................

Thanks for correcting me Tom - it was indeed more like $20K - the last one being $19K to be exact. Must be dreaming of the good old days....

He may be thinking of the Nugget/Collings Tim O'brien model. Those have been for sale for around $10K.

I see you snuck in while I was typing.

I think he'd be doing good to get $10-12k for it.

There are 2 new Nugget F's listed at $19.5K apiece on the Nugget Web site. So yeah, $30K for an A style seems out of whack. Custom inlay might be worth a bit of a premium, but it doesn't double the price of an instrument.

Nugget offers an A5 Jr model, like Gilchrist's basic/plain models, for $7500. Don't think I'd pay the premium for the bat inlay unless it comes with the batmobile.

The Nugget listing in the Builders database is here. The link there goes to a page on the Cafe (he says somewhat amazed).

I already looked there and didn't see anything listed for sale. Am I missing something?

Near as I can tell, every Nugget is "one of a kind . . . " They are all custom, hand made instruments, right?

This one is for sale for $19,500 . . . an F-style with similar craftsmanship, including the same style pick guard. The inlay is not as unique, but it is an f-style.

Yeah a 50% premium for the bat might be stretching it a bit. Pretty mandolin and me and bats go way back so I could relate to it. For the moment I'll stick with my $550 KM900 to statisfy my A desires when they arise.

Since I'm not interested in buying it, I'll just comment on how cool the headstock and phases-of-the-moon inlays on the fretboard are. That mando has some mojo!

Best of luck on that sale. That is one expensive bat (headstock inlay). I suppose Nugget Deluxe F's would be around $50k in that universe.

There is a 1980 Nugget A-5 selling on Sandy Munro's website for $10,500, and I've seen other standard (non-deluxe inlay) Nuggets selling for about that price.

Maybe the hardware is 14K gold. However, it is one beautiful mandolin.....man I would love to play that little beauty.
