Antique Gibson Mandolin Banjo - I need help!
Hello Everybody, I just joined this site last night so I could post this. Recently I acquired this amazing looking Mandolin Banjo that happens to be a Gibson. The number I found on it is 1164 5-19. I know that the man who owned it was born in 1885, I got it from his daughter. It has the original purple lined hard shell case that is in awesome condition. It has 8-strings, the back is open. It has the Gold Gibson Quality Kalamazoo tag on the inner rim. There is no logo on the headstock. Let me know what you want to see and I will post more pictures. Thank you so much for helping!

That is a interesting instrument. I am not a banjo guy and I have never seen a bridge with outriggers like that. Is that an effective way to prevent tipping and have no detrimental side effects?

I have no clue, I'm not a musical person I just bought this because I recognized the Gibson logo, it will be for sale once I find out everything about it.

The bridge is a standard Grover non-tip bridge, nothing exciting about it. The mandolin banjo is not a real sought after instrument even with the Gibson name on it. There were later models of the Gibson mandolin banjo that are sought after by banjo players to be converted to 5 strings. This one has the prerequisite number of hooks (24) but it has the wrong neck attachment for the conversion.

That batch number identifies it as an MB Jr from 1922.
