    Default New Christopher Guest album

Yeah, that Christopher Guest, from Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind.

I would have put it in a music specific category, but there doesn't seem to be a category for "New Age," which is the term that pops into my head first. Probably about half the songs have mandolin on them.

    The Beyman Bros are:
Christopher Guest - multi-instrumentalist, writer, actor, and filmmaker (Spinal Tap, Best in Show, Waiting For Guffman) whose most recent recordings include the popular soundtrack for A Mighty Wind.

David Nichtern - best known for writing the hit song Midnight at the Oasis, he has worked with everyone from Jerry Garcia to Paul Simon to Krishna Das, and more recently has created OM yoga Mix, At Ease and various other popular yoga and meditation albums.

CJ Vanston - all-star keyboardist extraordinare who has played with Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Deborah Harry, Dolly Parton and many more, and is also Spinal Tap's keyboard player and musical director.

Linked is a video of them recording one of the tracks in the studio. Guest definitely gets his licks in. There's another mandolin player in there also, who's shown at the beginning of the video, a guy with long grey hair. Anyone know who he is?

It's cool watching the process. Nice sound too.
It's nice to see one of the greatest bass players ever too:
    Leland Sklar.
Leland toured with James Taylor and played on many of his albums. Also showed up in a Phil Collins music video in the 90's.

Looks like Nigel is playing an MT or MT2. He needs to start a band with Steve Martin. Eugene Levy can take the vocals...

Probably same one he played in A Mighty Wind.

What, no mention of the K-4 he's also playing?

"We had a great day at the Village Recorder, thanks to Jeff Greenberg. We were also lucky enough to snag uber-engineer Ed Cherney and a band of insanely talented gents: Lee Sklar on bass, Rafael Padilla and Jo Pusateri on percussion, George Doering on anything with strings."

The music doesn't do anything for me, but I love seeing Guest playing mandolins.

I hope and pray that they do another Spinal Tap movie one day. With all these classic bands getting back together, they could play off that theme.

He still has the (Gasp!) old tail piece on his MT-2!

I always thought Nigel Tufnel chewed gum to look like Jeff Beck but it might be what he does all the time?

I am not sure, but in the photos it looks like Christopher is sporting a Monteleone, as well as some other F5.

Any true Tap fan should get a copy of the (Special Edition) This Is Spinal Tap DVD, which is almost like getting another Tap film. There's a lot of footage never used in the theatrical release, alternate versions on some of the same scenarios/scenes which indicate just how much of the dialogue was unscripted and improvised. Plus, you can turn on the "Audio Commentary by Spinal Tap" (Guest/McKean/Shearer in character) with them all continually calling the director a "######" and how they were misled into doing the movie, etc. Funny stuff - this is really another movie in itself!

There's a DVD you can find in the Wal-Mart $5 bins called Still Crazy which is on the dinosaur band reunification theme. Not in the same league as Spinal Tap, but it has its moments.

Looks to me like the other (not the Monte) is a Collings MF-5. Pic #6.

The "about" link for Doc Beyman says:
"Mr. Guest plays Collings acoustic guitars, Music Man electrics and Collings and Monteleone mandolins. The mandola and mandocello were made by Gibson in 1924 and 1916 respectively. The clarinet is a Buffet as in buffet."
