Just going through some ageing session recordings and found some nice unidentified tunes, one of which is below. Was wondering if some kind soul could put a name to it so I can fill in the blanks?

Are you sure the transcription is accurate? It feels like it wants to be in Dminor, but it has some odd notes.

    I'm assuming it's a reel?

We have to get like the rest of the ITM community and learn the abc system. It is a lot easier to transmit tunes that way.

    Mike,

I think that's the Tony Sullivan tune "Exile of Erin." Here are the ABCs:

Thanks Zoukboy! It's Exile of Erin without a doubt.

FWIW in the session recording I went from this tune flowed made-for-each-other nicely into the Merry Blacksmith.

Here's another one (reel)! The beats are marked by the dots. I've asked the players several times what this one is, but no-one can *ever* remember...

    <span style='font-family:Courier'>Part A

    . # # # . # # # . # # # . # # # . # # # . # # # . # # # .

    Part B

    --------------------------------------4-000---------------------&#124;
    ----------------------------------------------------------------&#124; x4</span>

The end of part A is not quite right but part B is faithful, I think.

Thank your for the ABC. I was able to copy it into tabedit and get both the notation and tab. Is there a site that explains abc system. I import a lot of it into tabedit but can't seem to get a handle on how to read it direct or write it?

    http://abc2win.com/overview.html explains it pretty well.

here are links to download shareware:

    http://abc2win.com/ for PC.
    http://www.barfly.dial.pipex.com/ for MAC.

A great archive of tunes is on Henrik Norbeck's site:

    http://www.norbeck.nu/abc/

    Enjoy!

Another pat on the back to Zoukboy. I downloaded the barfly program and Some of Henrik Norbecks collections, and for the first time really appreciated the abc system. I have used it before, and always found it a bit cumbersome, but with the notation of Henrik's collection, and the split screen facility of Barfly, it is really convenient to go through a collection of tunes. I have always used Tabledit for entering tunes, now I just have to figure out how to get these programs to exchange. First attempt to import abc in Tabledit didn't work, but I'll figure it out.

Spencer, I copy the ABC to the clipboard and then select Import on Tabledit - it gives you the option to pull it straight into TAB - works great

Steph: Thanks for helping. I use a Mac, and it doesn't seem to work quite the same way, I'll have to try it on a PC. With the Mac, it asks you to import a file, even with the text in the clipboard. Reasonably simple to paste into a text file, save as abc and then import. My problem was that in the texts of this thread, there is no X: line. Once I put that in, it worked fine as a file import.

And here's another mystery reel. The recording was good quality this time, so the transcription below is pretty much faithful. I love the way the parts of this one sound so different... is it changing "modes" or something?

I don't have a name for that one but it's on a Bothy Band record - in the middle of an arrangement if memory serves, on flute and clavinet. I checked "Old Hag You Have Killed Me" and it's not on there. Haven't had a chance to check the others...

The tune modulates from G major in the 1st part to E minor in the 2nd, back to G in the 3rd and looks like E minor again in the 4th but there was part of your tab I didn't understand.

There's another useful website for converting abc files to pdf or gif or a midi file if you don't have Barfly. It is: http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html Copy and paste the abc file and click convert & voila! Judith

I think this is it, or at least the 1st and 2nd parts. The Bothy Band recorded it on "Old Hag You Have Killed Me." I missed it when I checked the first time.

zoukboy you must have gone through your CDs to answer that, for which I thank you profoundly. I certainly owe you a few drinks should you ever be in London!
