The capillary effect clearly got me on this one. The teardrop shape intended for the middle doesn't come through because the exposed endgrain at the top and bottom of the teardrop sucked up too much dye, I presume. I thought that alcohol based dyes were supposed to help avoid this problem, but I can understand how even with alcohol as a solvent the dye can collect in the endgrain.
