Laurie Lewis was born in Torrance, CA (south of Los Angeles), and moved to Berkeley, CA in 1959 aged 8. She lives in Berkeley today. Lewis started playing Bluegrass at jams in Paul’s Saloon in San Francisco from 1972 and has led bands bearing her name since the 1980s (first Grant Street, then the Right Hands). Tom Rozum has played with Lewis since 1886, Patrick Sauber and Andrew Conklin for about decade (with a break for the latter when he lived on the East Coast) and Brandon Godman for around a year (since he moved from Nashville to San Francisco). Lewis is sometines labelled "Newgrass" as she also performs many styles of music as wellas Bluegrass (Old Time, Country, Blues, Torch Ballads., Norteño). Including for a while she played Bass in a Traditional Jazz band. Here she was joined by Rachel Tietjen of the Oakland group the T Sisters.
