Thread: Reichman's Loar Bridge Saddle

    Default Reichman's Loar Bridge Saddle

I was watching the video about the Reichman Loar ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvB2PxEsGbM ) and at about 2:17 there is a close up of the bridge saddle. The rear of the compensation cuts seem to be sloped acutely downward. More so than other saddles I have seen on some pretty good mandolins. Is this just optical illusion, or is it really set up that way. More importantly, should saddles be cut that way? Most that I see break sharply at the front but fall away more gradually giving the string support for a bit before leaving the saddle. Is John's the better way. Sure seems like it could affect tone and tuning. How do you do it?

I don't think that's the same instrument in that picture at 2:17
. The D and G strings are in octaves and not unison like all other images of the Loar in the video. I'm guessing that's his Mandola?

    I believe mike is correct.

I had the pleasure of hanging out with John this week. He let me play and photograph his loar pretty intensely. Here are a couple photos of the bridge.

I just found an older thread about the same topic. Didn't notice the string gauages. Thanks.
