The first time I heard of Iris Dement was when she provided the music for the closing episode of the TV show "Northern Exposure". She has such a haunting voice that it's hard to get her songs out of your mind. Yes, I agree, she sangs real gooder!

I think there are only two mando players on the Songcatcher soundtrack - Sam Bush and Jeanie Richardson.

That would be Deanie Richardson. And yes, she played mando on that song. I think, in addition to Sam Bush and Deanie Richardson, Darrell Scott also plays mandolin on some songs in that movie.

And by the way, the movie is called "Songcatcher."

As for Iris Dement, I would marry her on her voice alone. She is an amazing singer and songwriter, and puts on a very nice live performance.

Mark, you can't marry her. She already married Greg Brown!

Jeez, I wasn't aware of that. Shows how out of touch I have been. What a talented pair that must be, though. Have they made any albums together?

I love Iris. You gotta see her in a live show. Her speaking voice is nothing like her singing voice.

She was the best thing in that movie, which was a bit wacky.

Iris live with John Prine is just about the finest combination ever.

That album they made together is great. Some pretty funny material on there.

Yes, that's a classic. I saw them together after that came out. What a hoot! They seemed to really enjoy one another, and to love the old cheating songs they were singing.

What mandolin? I saw that a bunch of times and I neither saw nor heard any mandolin. Am I going crazy? Dulcimer, banjo, guitar, fiddle, yes. Iris sang to the fiddle accompaniment of Muse Watson.
Awesome O Death sequence (David Patrick Kelly, Bobby McMillon, and Hazel Dickens). There were some bright spots in the film. And decent music, thanks to Sheila Kay Adams, music director.

Iris is great and I agree that her with John Prine would be great though I have never seen them together. "Our Town" always brings a tear to my eye, also "Mama's Opry". The two disks I have of hers are just great, not overproduced, just great songs.

Years ago I happened to channel surf to Austin City Limits and saw this woman in a country dress with a rather unique voice for the first time. She closed with just her and a piano singing My Life... that's where I fell in love. So, so, so lonesome. That's still my favorite CD of hers, just some painful healing tunes on there.

Iris Dement does a real nice duet with Steve Earle on a song he wrote with her in mind, "I'm Still in Love with You." (at least I think that's the name of it.)

Agree with J. Mark, she's a siren alright.
