    Default Mando/Guitar/Vocal Duos

My guitar-playing friend and I have formed a duo. I'm interested in recordings of other guitar/mando/vocal duos, especially non-bluegrass ones. I'm already familiar with The Monroe Bros., Garcia & Grisman, Skaggs & Rice, and Thile & Daves. What else would you recommend?

Take any song you like and work it to a mandolin, guitar, vocal duet. A lot of Reno Smiley duet work with these instruments although not recorded as such. Other songs may just be waiting for y'all to do them this way.

    Jimmy Gadreau & Moondi Klein.

When they were part of newgrass Chesapeake, Moondi's guitar was fairly subdued behind super-star mandolin, dobro, and bass players. As a duo, their interweave of guitar, mandolin, and vocal lines is simply spectacular:

They have at least one add'l release, as well.

The obvious ones missing so far from this thread are the Louvin Brothers:

And of course Bill & Doc:

As far as non-bluegrass goes, how about:

    Show Of Hands:

    Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick:

Many of these duos in hillbilly music. I would strongly recommend the Blue Sky Boys (Bill and Earl Bolick) as one of the best. Bill Bolick used his (Martin?) mandolin as sort of a "third voice" in the harmony.

There are also the various combinations that David Grisman has created like Doc and Dawg, Del and Dawg and the things he did with Tony Rice like Tone Poems and the Pizza Tapes. Pizza Tapes of course was two guitars with Garcia in there and quite a bit of Doc and Dawg had Jack Lawrence in there also.

Norman Blake has done his share also recording with Tony Rice often with Norman on mandolin for several cuts and his Meeting on Southern Soil with Peter Ostrouschko.

Thanks for all the great recommendations. I've got a lot of listening to do! So far, Mandolin Orange is the model for what my partner & I are aiming for.

I did a recording with the aforementioned Reeb and Caleb called "Oh Do You Remember" a couple years ago...
We used all vintage ribbon mics and Altec pres, and wound up releasing it in mono--it sounded great that way.

You can listen to snippets of it here...
