I was told they are the same thing. EJ74 is just the new name.

Good one sunburst! Yes mandoforumid they are the same string just different packaging. No more strings in the paper sleeves and slipped in the clear cover. I just talked to my rep and the 'E' stands for 'environmental' due to paper packaging being recycled material.
No difference at all other than they doubled the price. Kind of annoying.

Yep, many of the D'Addario sets are in transition as we speak. My last order (a couple of weeks ago), had some sets in the new packaging, some the old, depending on what they were. Same strings, new SKU and packaging.

Thanks for the responses guys !
There was me thinking it could be the strings that were different.
In fact it's the entire environment around the strings that is being played around with here. Hopefully for the better.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

Gents - don from D'Addario here. There has been no price increase on our sets as of this post - neither J74 or our new EJ74. The difference is the packaging. The J74 set had a vinyl pouch. EJ74 has been moved over to the cardboard sleeve and an inner baggie to keep the strings fresh.

Neither can I - and I am English!
Personally, I’ve never used EJ74s. I bought a lifetime’s supply of J74s several years ago and I’m still working my way through them.
I have a theory that, like a good wine, unused strings improve with age.
Here in the South (USA), the humidity can reek havoc. I had some J74s that I bought at a good price some time ago. While I probably change strings more often tham most, it took me a while to go through them. (Something in my chemistry corrodes most strings.) Anyway, the old paper wrappers allowed humidity to get to them and I had to throw quite a few (mostly unwound) strings out. The sealed plastic packages have made a big difference.

E=Energy, so therefore, MC (Mandolin Cafe) squared equals Energy. We get our energy from Mandolin Cafe! Thanks Scott!
