Looks interesting, but "Mandolinists Like Salami" might have made more sense.
Sorry Jim but this was in the celtic folk section a couple days ago with another Italian folk tunes book out now. Here's the link. JohnItalian Folk. Books
They both sound like interesting books. I tried the email in the link but haven't received a reply yet.

Creativity is just doing something wierd and finding out others like it.
Kind of confusing title. I am reminded of the Battle of Salamis, which was, surprisingly, a naval encounter, not a sausage slugfest. (And again, slugs prefer vegetables, which goes to show the general inadequacy of language).
It turns out that I left off the comma, like Eats, Shoots and Leaves.
I just got this Table of Contents from Sheri M. for the Salami book. I was sort of hoping for some expansion of the history of mandolin on the West Coast but it may just be limited to SF and to Italian-Americans. That would leave out the likes of Samuel Adelstein. I would think that he deserves a note in passing, at least. He prob ate salami as well.

Gosh, has it been that long ago...? I hadn't seen this thread before...it's certainly still relevant. Adelstein is mentioned in passing in my Salami book but only as connected to the Arrilago school, I believe. (don't have the book in front of me). Adelstein pops up in my new book--again in passing--with 100% concentration on only Italian immigrant mandolinists. Adelstein still fascinates me as his candid views on mandolin technique are still debated (French vs Neapolitan etc). I wonder why there hasn't been much written about him--a complete biography?--but maybe there has been one and I missed it. There are close to 300 citations about him in California newspapers and I often wonder if he knew or met Salvatore Fachutar. They were the same generation-about ten years apart. Ah~ must leave that for another day.
Let me jump in uninvited with a huge plug for Sheri's book: Mandolins Like Salami.
A great, great read for any lover of the instrument. A wealth of information, history, anecdotes and sheer mando-delight.

Mandolins, Like Salami. (2005) First Edition. Social history, photographs, appendices, music catalogs"

I have no idea if there are any but Sheri would be the first place to go for a copy.
Wonderful book, BTW.
oh gosh, the order form is five years old. I best update it with proper taxes etc. it also has the wrong mailing address!
