Thanks. A new screw hole is easy enough. Are the Grovers a noted improvement?
Looking to upgrade the tuners on both my Eastman mandos; MD305 and MD314..
Any MD300 Series owners who have done it. Any recommendations?
Would prefer drop-in replacements to avoid headstock...
I've been an Eastman owner for 10+ years. I chose an MD314 over a MD514 for the same reason I chose an MD305 over MD505. I prefer the drier, woodier tone that I believe the thin matte finish tends to...
I should have been more specific. RE: It might not be fair to compare it to an F5S. No doubt. I agree. Rather than compare - it's the Northfield "ilk" or relative sonic signs of Northfield DNA I'd...
A friend who lives 1000 miles away recently visited. I got to hear and play his Northfield NFA-5V3 4th Generation - absolutely fantastic, balanced woody tone.

Gotcha'... I've done that...
Got confused. I thought your tad quotes (below) were your assessment

Hello MikeEdgerton - Have you played one?
I never got to play any Larrivee mandolins. Why were they a disappointment?
Has anybody played and/or purchased one of these yet? Please share your review and/or thoughts

I have a preference for the satin/matte finish. I have a MD314 and a MD305 - to my ears they have a dryer, woodier tone than 500 series. I've never had an issue with the tuners on either instrument.
I agree the 300 series (satin finish) sound better (woody, dry, open) than the nitro glossy models ... I own two MD305 and MD314..

I have an older 305. EJ74s are my mainstays. All the 300 series have a satin finish. I've read that Eastman no longer uses nitro; switching to a poly based "TrueTone". "Varnish" finishes are...
Hmmm... Haven't played any newer ones. I really like the woody tone of the satin finish.. I own two 300 series (MD305 - 7-8 years old & a MD314 - purchased June 2020).. and a friend has a 10+ years...
You might want to look at these. I have one on each of Eastmans. They are pricey but, IMO the best arm rests I have ever used.

If you are upgrading from a stamped to a cast tail piece on an Eastman mandolin, you might want to consider this as FYI:
I inquired with Eastman a year or two ago about obtaining a cast tail piece...
Put simply ... the tone gard does not actually "increase the volume" per se .. it prevents the back from a belly-press-dampening effect, so to speak, which can be difficult to avoid if standing while...
Maybe a better way to describe the effect of a tone gard is that is allows the mando to resonate fully (undampened) and that of the arm rest is for comfort (no stress on forearm) - I don't see a...
Great input from all.
In 45+ years of playing guitar and mandolin, I'd never been particularly interested in adding anything on to my instruments. At the suggestion of another long-time player (and...
Thanks for the responses.
What are your thoughts (or reviews) of this product?
Especially if/when used along with a Tone Gard.

I second your post...
Hahahaha...
Since I started this thread with "Did it affect the way you normally held your mandolin? Require an adjustment to get used to the feel?" and now that I've had one for a month or so.... ...
That is basically the consensus. It easier to hold the mandolin away from the body while seated. Not as easy while standing.
