Nice score; great sounding mandolin!
One of these days I hope my brain will connect the dots between Italian spruce tops and consistently great sounding mandolins (to my ear, anyway). Maybe I will...
Looks great! The back has more figure than a lot of the birch ones I have seen, including mine. Do you think it could be maple?
Tell me about it. That lead up to the sweep around the 46 second mark and again at around 2:07 really pricked up my ears. Had me reaching for my mandolin to try to figure it out. Very cool.

Cool version of the tune from Bob Minner’s (EXCELLENT) new Norman Blake tribute album: From Sulpher Springs to Rising Fawn.
I haven’t heard Mike play this...
I have taken lessons with Mike and have adopted this grip (or, have done my best to, anyway). I didn’t have too big a change from my prior grip, save for getting the top under my thumb joint, rather...
Yep, #3 is MC playing Sitting on Top of the World at Music City Roots. I’ve watched that countless times, trying to get just even an ounce of that groove in my playing
Congrats! Looks great. Play it well.
The Duff 2-pt. should look and sound like this…

Mike Compton played a RW 2-pt early in his career. There is a new pumpkin color topped one on RW’s website for sale (NFI).
As I understand it, Paul Duff feels like the 2-Pt really sits between his...
Great topic! Looking forward to hearing input from others.
My new strategy (trying for the first time now) is to focus on learning a given song on both mandolin and guitar, with the goal of...
This is from their website. Apparently they are well regarded for their fiddles.
I’m curious about the “proprietary acoustic bracing.”
Adding the link for part II.

Sharing this cool video given its window into Mike Compton’s approach to supporting rhythm on the mandolin.

Saw this at Gruhn’s and was not familiar with the builder.

Gruhn’s has some videos on Facebook of Billy Strings and Bryan Sutton trying them out. (I pasted in a link below, but if folks...
Saw this add (NFI) on Reverb suggesting Collings has informed dealers of MAP increases planned for January. The suggested increase is approaching 5% of the retailer’s listed price, but I’m not sure...
Am I seeing it right that it is not a raised fretboard?
I have a close cousin to #615. Someone knowledgeable about mandolins, generally, and Steve’s work, specifically, once told me many built around this time were spec builds (i.e. not custom ordered)....
Frankly, I have been a bit surprised at the lack of “cost of living” price increases by some of the better known, sole proprietor builders. I haven’t done an exhaustive study by any stretch, but when...
It was stunning, and I was very tempted, as the two bar Italian spruce top is my favorite Artist series configuration. It just seems to hit a great balance.
I know it as part of D Medley from Jon Sholle’s “Out of the Frying Pan” album. Glad to learn the name now. Below is Jon’s version, in case you are interested.

P.S....
Glad you all enjoyed it.
I have been poking around the interwebs for some video of Nancy Blake’s white face A3 oval, but haven’t come across it yet. I’ve heard it is particularly good. If anyone...
Saw this full concert uploaded recently of NB and The Rising Fawn String Ensemble. Such talent! Only two tunes with Nancy playing mandolin, beginning around the 43 minute mark. But they are great,...
I think Banjo Ben Clark sells them.
NFI.
A bit dated (2015) interview with NB in The American Interest. He seems to be a fan of the Punch Bros., generally.
PG: Do you have any advice for young musicians who are playing bluegrass music?...
