This Mandolin Mondays, the incredible Canadian mandolinist Adrian Gross of The Slocan Ramblers gives us some beautiful tones on his vintage Gibson mandola with an impressive performance of this Jimmie Rodgers classic.
The Slocan Ramblers are Canada’s bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, The Slocans have become a leading light of today’s acoustic music scene. With a reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan, The Slocans have been winning over audiences from Merlefest to RockyGrass and everywhere in between.
Their most recent album, Queen City Jubilee, just won the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award for Traditional Album of the Year. It's an amazing record that walks the line between bluegrass and oldtime traditions while looking forward to bring new sounds and ideas to the genres. Here's a word from Adrian about this video, "Jimmie Rodgers singing 'Miss the Mississippi and You' has been one of my favorites since I first heard it--there’s so much going on and it’s all so beautifully layered. I love how the piano and string backgrounds create so much movement, and how deceptively complex the melody is as it weaves around the chords. For my rendition, I tried to grab as much from the original as I could, and it sits perfectly on my old Gibson mandola."
