Winfield, Kans. — 23 mandolin contestants representing 15 U.S. states competed this past Friday in the Walnut Valley Mandolin Championship.
First place was awarded to 16 year-old Solly Burton of Sullivan, Indiana. Solly is a home schooled high school junior that has been playing the mandolin for seven years. This was his first time to the Festival and the contest. He took home the 1st place trophy, $250 and a Weber Custom Elite F-Style Mandolin from Weber Mandolins of Logan, Montana.
Second place went to 17 year-old high school senior Dominick Leslie of Evergreen, Colorado. He too has been playing the mandolin for seven years and this is the fourth time he has entered this contest. Dominick was awarded the 2nd place trophy and chose a Collings MF Custom Mandolin by Collings Guitars of Austin, Texas.
Third place went to 18 year-old Brian Roe of Hasty/Loveland, Colorado placed 3rd in this contest. Brian has played mandolin for six years. In addition to the 3rd place trophy, Brian chose the BRW FT-MS Mandolin by BRW Musical Instruments of Ostrander, Ohio.
The Annual Walnut Valley Festival, one of the largest in the U.S., is held the third weekend in September each year in Winfield, Kansas.
