Professor August Watters of Berklee College of Music gave a lecture entitled "Mandolins and MacDowell" on August 12, 2007 for the Monadnock Summer Lyceum, to be rebroadcast over National Public Radio.
The one-hour program also included a performance by the New England Mandolin Ensemble, featuring Marilynn Mair, Jim Dalton, and Mitch Nelin.
The lecture was given on the 100th anniversary of America's first artist's colony, and explored composer Edward MacDowell's achievements and ideas in relation to today's crisis in music education.
The New England Mandolin Ensemble completed the event with a full-length set of music from their new CD, Sip a Little New.
The Monadnock Summer Lyceum was founded in 1829, featuring nationally-recognized speakers representing a wide range of topics.
New Hampshire listeners can listen to the "Mandolins and MacDowell" broadcast on Saturday morning, August 18. Others may listen to participating NPR affiliates.
