Providence, R.I. — July 21-22, 2007, the Providence Mandolin Orchestra will host the award-winning Het Consort, Holland's leading mandolin and guitar ensemble, who will travel to Rhode Island following their New York debut.
Featured in concerts and festivals throughout Europe, Het Consort has dazzled audiences with its exciting contemporary repertoire and virtuosic performances. Het Consort is directed by the noted guitarist, arranger and music historian Alex Timmerman, professor of mandolin and guitar at music academies in Zwolle, Arnhem and Enschede.
Het Consort and the Providence Mandolin Orchestra will perform in concert on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at St. Martin's Hall, 50 Orchard Avenue, Providence, at 8:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is $15 ($10 seniors/students).
With the exception of one arrangement, both groups will be performing original music composed specifically for plucked string ensembles. A highlight of the evening concert will be the first 'trans-Atlantic' performance of Victor Kioulaphides' Concerto per orchestra a pizzico, a piece commissioned by Het Consort and given its US premiere by the PMO here last year.
PMO director Mark Davis said "This is a fantastic piece in which the composer treats each section of the orchestra as a soloist. We are thrilled to have the chance to perform this piece with Het Consort."
At 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 21, Het Consort director Alex Timmerman will present an illustrated lecture on "The Roman mandolin, its development through the ages, ...and its completion by Luigi Embergher." It is worth noting that all members of Het Consort perform on original Embergher instruments. Mr. Timmerman's presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Room 110, The Wheeler School, 216 Hope Street, Providence.
On Sunday, July 22, Het Consort will perform a recital at the Jamestown Public Library, 26 North Road, Jamestown. This concert is at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
