The Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center Adult Music Program in Front Royal, Virginia, announces two Mandolin Workshops taught by Niles Hokkanen to be held October 12-15, 2003 and November 9-12, 2003.
The October workshop "Up The Neck and Position Playing - Intermediate Mandolin" will explore box positions for soloing, shifting exercises, sliding, playing up the neck for tonal reasons (or ease of string bending) or to access open string drones, moving doublestops up and down the neck for playing melody/harmony, and more.
The November workshop "Blues mandolin for intermediate players and up" will include soloing, riffing, rythmic backup, tone/sonic techniques (muting, squeal harmonics, string choking, etc.).
A $375 workshop fee for each workshop includes all materials, instruction, lodging, meals, and other extras. Both programs start on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. and conclude on Wednesday by 11:30 a.m. Participation is limited to 40 people. A day rate is available for $300 and includes three lunches and Sunday dinner. A $100 deposit will hold a workshop space with the balance due payable upon arrival at the program. An Early-Bird Rate of $345 is available with paid-in-full by September 15, 2003.
Niles' teaching credits include the Augusta Heritage Workshops in Elkins, WV, (87-92), The Folk Music Institute (Finland) and the Sibelius Academy (Finland), Steve Kaufman's Mandolin Kamp 2002. He is the author of numerous mandolin instructional books and published/edited The Mandocrucian's Digest mandolin magazine from 1986-97.
