Emanuele Barbella was born 1710 in Naples and died there in 1773. He composed one opera, Elmira Generosa, numerous works for two and three violins, and a variety of pieces for two mandolins. Barbella was a prominent violinist, as was his father Francesco Barbella.

While Emanuele Barbella wrote predominantly for the violin, several of his works for mandolin were published by Gabriele Leone. Leone, a London based music publisher, was the author of a widely used mandolin tutor, a composer of music for mandolin, and one of the most renowned mandolin performers of the Eighteenth century.
