Chris Thile

Chris Thile is best known as the mandolinist and singer of the now retired progressive acoustic trio, Nickel Creek and his current group, Punch Brothers

He has also recorded frequently as a solo artist; he released his debut album, Leading Off, in 1994, and has released numerous recordings and collaborated with many artists ranging from Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Mike Marshall and Edgar Meyer to Dolly Parton. Nickel Creek's self-titled release of 2003 went gold and won a Grammy.

Born in Oceanside, California in 1981, Thile began playing the mandolin at the age of 5, taking lessons from John Moore. Soon thereafter, he began performing at bluegrass festivals.

At age 12, he won the prestigious national mandolin championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 1993. Thile was awarded the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) award for Mandolinist of the Year in 2001.
