Ha, ha! keep time: how sour sweet music is,
When time is broke and no proportion kept!
--William Shakespeare
Sounds like he is on a 'Rocky Road'.
Too wise.
The best part of that link was the Osborne's performance of the number...love that.
Didn't even mention that the two "strangers" looking for the "moonshine still" never came down from Rocky Top (reckon the never will...).
I guess it's OK to sing about someone being "disappeared " as long as there's no alcohol involved.

Funny... My High School's (E.C Glass) fight song used the Notre Dame fight song with lyrics including bring out the whiskey bring out the glass, when we yell we yell like hell for the glory of E C Glaaaaaasssss!
Seems a silly thing to obsess over, to me.

Should send the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland band to the guy who decided this' house and play it all night long....
I liked it too. But I had to close my eyes so I wouldn't see those horrid jackets.
I found it interesting that he did a lot of intermittent chop chords at the end of each phrase, and didn't chop all the way through. It seemed a little weird hearing it start and stop like that. No continuity. But still, a great performance. Wish I could sing that cleanly at that register!

The replacement song should be:
Wonder what that man looks like...
the world is better off without bad ideas, good ideas are better off without the world
Once I had a girl on Rocky Top,
Half bear the other half cat;
Wild as a mink as sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that.
This is more problematic, the results of the moonshine.
this kind of behavior from the gubment drives me to drink!
They sure as heck didn't ban the old guy who brought me & my work's colleague a 1/2 gallon jug of m*******e in Owensboro, back in '92 - milk of amnesia !!!. The best version of Rocky Top i've heard,is from the record, "Through the Morning,Through the Night" by Dillard & Clark, with Byron Berline on Fiddle,

I think if this guy believes "Rocky Top" is some kind of degenerate propaganda, he can't get out much.
They play stuff a hundred times worse than that as background muzak in shopping malls, these days. At least they do here...

Well thank you all.
I've only gone out and bought an Osborne Bros. CD.
I always loved the exceptional singing on "Ruby", but their singing on "Rocky Top" just pushed the buy button for me.
Just goes to prove there's nothing like banning something to make it more popular. :D

I would understand if Rocky Top (or Country Roads or Me & Bobby McGee etc.) were banned for the really bad ways that people play and sing these songs (in sessions and at concerts alike. Country Roads was done nicely by the Country Gentlemen and Nat Stuckey for example. I donīt recall if thereīs any good version of Rocky Top out apart from the one by the Osborne bros.).
But in this case... everything points to me being right in being prejudiced against school teachers and their superintendents.
