Thread: Broken Blue Chip

  1. #1

    Default Broken Blue Chip

I'm totally bummed. My BC TAD 40 broke in two today. I have a TAD 60 that I'll have to use for a while. Anybody else have one break? Blue Chip says the picks will eventually wear. Mine lasted about a year of one hour a day practice use. I guess all good things gotta come to an end. Even so, I'm still pretty impressed with BC.

Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in?

I miss stuff on the cafe all the time, but this is the first breakage that I'm aware of. 7 years I've owned 2. No visible wear and never a thought about breakage. They're big thick buggers, though. E-mail BC, they'd like to hear of breakage, I'm sure.

I play every day, and play hard most of the time, and I have had two blue chips TAD 60 for many many years, and there is no discernible wear and they never broke.

I have never broken a pick, even when I tried.

Pics, and an explanation of HOW it happened. Did it happen while playing? or did you try to drill through it? (I've heard one story where a guy tried to drill some grippy holes in it, and it busted.)

But never, ever, have I heard of one breaking in normal use.

The only broken BC I recall had been drilled, as Terzinator mentions above. I have a TP 40- mostly relegated to the guitar and for mandolin use a TPR 50 and TPR 60.
No signs of wear on any of the picks. I am sorry for your loss Banjoboy. Despite the insensitivity of this, I would also like to see a photo of the corpse.

I use 40 thickness as my preferred on both guitar and mandolin. I can't imagine breaking one by playing mandolin but I do pound away on the guitar and have yet to break any of mine. Perhaps some elaborating by the OP on what happened?

I've never heard of one breaking either, so it seems odd. I would at least ping them and see what they have to say.

While I do know several players who have managed two wear through BCs (one in under a year!) I too have never seen one break before... weird!

I'm with you on this. Until you see it, it didn't happen. Where are the photos? Some things in life are for certain. A broken BC is not one of them. I bet you get another one for free, if you can prove it happened. I've heard of others saying this happened to them but no proof. Dropped it and it got run over by a studded snow tire truck I can believe.

Didn't someone try to punch a hole in a BC pick with a nail a while back?

Hereby & forthwith, any instrument with an odd number of strings shall be considered broken. With regard to mix levels, usually the best approach is treating the mandolin the same as a cowbell.

That ought to do it. Let's give the OP a little time to respond and perhaps post a photo and explanation. Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time here at the cafe (not me, I assure you) and expect the OPs to respond RIGHT NOW! I'm curious, as a BC consumer. Many of us are.

Why would the OP say it broke if it didn't ?. Years back i bought a coffee cup for use at work,it was made from 'unbreakable' Melamine. While washing it out one morning,i dropped it on the floor & it broke in two. Sometimes the claims made for items aren't bourne out in 'real life' circumstances. Plus, there's always the slight chance of mechanical imperfections in manufactured items of any sort. As we all know, items made from Carbon Fibre are pretty tough - right ?. Well just to correct that thought, have a look at all the websites dedicated to fractured or collapsed CF bike / car parts,

First I've heard of a BC breaking. Pretty impressive. Mine is 2 years old and no visible wear except surface scratches.

Not really a question of WHETHER it broke. Question is HOW???

Small explosion? Nuclear missle? Really dumb behavior?? We're all curious.

Come on, 'fess up. (We won't give you a hard time, banjoboy. Ha.)

Was the break preceded by the words, "hey. Watch this!"?

    We love good stories.

If it's true it is a sad story, since of course without one of them, no player has a hope of achieving true mastery of his instrument.

My post was mostly in jest. This is the internet, after all. "Pics or it didn't happen" is the rule.

A flaw or impurity in the sheet of material might allow breakage. A severe case of " Whatch this" or " Let's see what happens" might account for misadventure breakage. But I'm with youz guyz ... I've had several BC's for several years ... slight wear on the edges is all I've got on mine........ pics and a how it happened story would be in order here...... And thanks for the general humor peeps .... I like to start my day with a good laugh... R/
