The last time I flew bi-coastally in the US I took my Flatiron A5-2 in its hard shaped case and put it in one of the compartments of a double tennis bag. That bag served as my one allowed carry-on and had plenty of room for the mandolin and all the stuff I needed for the flight. it fit easily in the overhead too. I would never put a mandolin in a gig bag. Makes me too nervous.

    Pete,
Hope you can stay for the "MandoGathering - West" that is happening at my place on November 2nd! That will give you a day to recover from Jet lag!

    Welcome to the USA Blackheathen.

Coming from a country that uses the metric system, you may find it difficult to accustom yourself to our primitive measurement system.

Here are some equivalents you may find useful:

    1 furlong = 201.168 meters (sorry, metres)
    1 fathom = 1.8288 metres
    1 lightyear = 9,460,730,472,580,800 metres

    Steve,
    That sounds brilliant. Perfect timing.
I'll be online most of the time I'm in the US and can by contacted by email or through the cafe.

Marty, perhaps I should wear a 37850ml hat during my stay - or is that only for people in the wild west?

It's for people in the wild west, and also for those who are enjoying the show.

Depending on the number of pints involved, the East can get pretty wild, too. And Killian, thanks for the Blazing Saddles reference!

    Steve,

Is it just a one day event? I'm about to book a car rental and not sure whether to book for 2 or 3 days.
On the first day I might drive to Hollywood - just because I can. Any other things to see in LA?

    Cheers,

Beforem you committ to a car rental now, check out hotwire.com where you can often find very good deals only a few days out from arrival. I use it on every trip now it it saves quite a bit of money. For reasons I have never worked out, the most expensive place I have found in the US to rent a car was Detroit, and that was for a crappy Toyota Yaris!

You can spend a day easily just driving around LA immersing yourself in all the popular culture icons we grew up with across the ocean. Sunset Bvd, Mulholland Drive and the rest.

    cheers

Sounds like fun. I found a Chevrolet Spark for 45 bucks a day. Is that good?

As long as you're not driving through Texas. They have some vehicles that would treat a Chevy Spark like a bump in the road....

Looks like one of those Georgia trucks to me. Can't be from Texas, we have front plates.

I may be forced to bring two mandolins so the other one might have to hide in the suitcase.
Since you're gearing this tour around visiting luthiers and players, I don't see the point in bringing two mandolins, unless you are planning on trading one -- maybe something hard to get from Oz? Consider keeping space for your new mandolin.
(Of course, if that becomes part of your plan, I don't know how you'll make it out of Steve's place without one of his. And that's so early in the trip.)

Let me know if you think you'll make it up to Northern California. There are a bunch of us in the SF Bay Area.

In May I got a Corolla for $25 a day for five days - Wed to Sun. If you can, look for a Hyundai rather than a Toyota, but it did seem to be random what you got. From the LAX renters (and at other big city airports ) you get pointed to a row and told to choose whichever one you liked. Satellite radio is good!
