It ain't gotta be perfect, as long as it's perfect enough!
I've had this book for a few months, but just now got around to reading it while on vacation. What a great read! I felt like I was watching the stories instead of reading them.
My older brother was exactly 18 months older than me, and shared some of Ira's traits. I can only imagine going on the road with him for 30 years.
I too missed this thread in the original run - I will have to find a copy of the book. Bill Bolick of the Blue Sky Boys told me some stories about the Louvin Brothers relationship; it will be good to read them, first-hand.
I've read the book, I've go the LP, and I try to play the music.
It was a tough life being in the music business then. And I thought my job was rough! But I was impressed with all the other musicians they influenced. They were a bridge from the "Greatest Generation" to the "Boomers." I first heard Louvin Brothers tunes played by a garage band of in the early '70s.
Mrs. Roberts, my singer, doesn't like the style though, so we don't do Louvin Brothers songs in public yet. I've been trying to get her to add "The Christian Life" and "The Great Atomic Power" to our set list.
Ha, ha! keep time: how sour sweet music is,
When time is broke and no proportion kept!

Ever tried, ever failed? No matter. Try again, fail again. Fail better.--Samuel Beckett

Got my copy today. It sure starts with a bang! Got out the Louvin Brothers box set to listen to while reading. I forgot about Paul Yandell playing with them. That is icing on the cake.
Saw this thread. Got book from library.
CONSUMED IT! Great read - loved it.
Thanks for the heads up on this one.

The book puts flesh and blood (and tears, yeah) onto histories like Neil Rosenberg's classic "Bluegrass, A History" which may be more complete and academically interesting but which seem to lack real people living real lives. Charlie's grandpa-on-the-back-porch voice feels so genuine and comfortable that you feel quite a loss when the book comes to its end. -- mandogio
