I believe it's Jerry Garcia, not Gerry. And yeah, that bit of history totally rocks it. Even in his later day state, Garcia played some tasteful guitar. Dawg is on his game most always, of course.

Haven't seen this since it came out (and that required a several-hour drive). I'd forgotten that great quote: "I think David tightened Jerry up a bit, and I think Jerry loosened David up." Nice combination. Now if you could just fuse it to the soul of Jerry Band, with a little Melvin Seals passion!

    Gerry Garcia and David Grisman.
3 years ago, I rented this DVD from the library...had never heard of Grisman, but knew Garcia of course from "The Dead", but didn't know anything about his acoustic stuff.

I was introduced to Old & In The Way from the movie; had the library get their CD, listened a few times and got the bluegrass bug.

I started going to BG jams, 6 months later picked up mando, and now 3 years from seeing that movie I play mando in a BG band, love Garcia's acoustic work, and consider Grisman my #2 favorite mando player right behind Monroe.

Funny how a movie can change your life...

One of my favorites. 'The Thrill Is Gone' music video from the movie alone is worth buying the DVD. You can get it on Amazon for 10 bucks.

Fantastic film! Two of my favorite musicians, and I love seeing some candid, "at-home" scenes of Jerry (whose b-day is coming up next week).

A must have for your video collection. I was listening to David Grisman's "Bluegrass Reunion" and noticed how much I enjoyed Jerry's voice. It sounds a little tired as a reflection of his health decline but his soul comes through.

I've only been playing mandolin for about three years now. I'm another one that got introduced to bluegrass music from old and in the way. I can clearly remember driving with a buddy of mine out in the middle of nowhere on our way to go camping, kayaking and fishing. I played drums in our little jam band and he was explaining the pieces of a bluegrass band to me. I noticed there was no drummer and asked, "What is that percussion sound right there?" He said, "That's that mandolin player chopping." That was my "I want to do that!" moment. That opened up a new world for me both as an aspiring player and an endless new genre of music to explore.

I have that movie and still watch it every now and then. It doesn't get old for me. The part where David talks about how they always said that they could do this for the rest of their lives always gets me.

Wel I bought the iTunes download of the Shady Grove album by Garcia and Grisman. The movie was free on Crackle but it'll probably cost $50-100 in music downloads

Seems like there was a thread about this a few years back, when a bunch of us found this DVD at Big Lot's stores in their cheapie bins for $2 or 3 dollars. I don't know how to find the thread but somebody that knows how might do that...great movie, documentary and music...
