FM, don't know if this was what you're thinking about, but I know John Monteleone made a Grand Artist guitar once.. It kind of had a Gibson Style O feel to it. Gibson harp guitars had scrolls too. I think Danny Ferrington made some scroll acoustic guitars for Elvis Costello - very funky!
