Thread: Could anyone please teach me how to read this?

Question Could anyone please teach me how to read this?

I've been looking far and wide to find a notation for Georgia on my Mind, as played by someone on youtube*. I got brought to the MCF - as I usually do - and this was in an old thread where someone asked for the tab. Everyone in that thread seemed to understand it..? I dunno, I'm no musical genius, so I was hoping I could get the advice of one? Much thanks in advance.

What you have here is the chord chart for the tune, with chords arranged in bars (the vertical lines).

Ah! Thank you sir, much obliged. The song is a personal favorite of mine and my grandmother's especially. My high school graduation is in May, and I'd like to play it for her when she flies cross-country to see attend. If you or anyone else could supply the individual picking as there is in the video it'd be great.

If you replace all the hashmarks with slashes, it looks a bit more conventional (although not lined up perfectly):

    [: /F / / / / | /em7b5 /A7 / / / / | /Dm / / / /| /Bb / bbm /|
    / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /1. / / / / / / / /2.

Great tune, but a very odd version in the video, as it leaves out most of the middle section. Seems to be an attempt to imitate someone else's improvised treatment of the tune. If you want to learn Georgia, first listen to a complete version. Then learn the melody and learn the chords. Then try to play the tune in some way that suits your own style and technique. Good luck!

As it makes for an interesting comparison, here are the two videos. Both were done in late 2008.

This won't really help you though, Nick. You need to learn the tune itself.

Okay! Thanks so much, Bruce. Maybe in the future if I can learn this and polish it accordingly, I'll post a video of what I've got.

Good! Thanks, Henry. I think anyone that wants to play in a jazzy style needs to start by learning to play the tunes straight. In fact, learn the lyrics too and sing them. They're part of the tune. (I've played with some great players that call the tunes by their first line, like "Let's play Missed the Saturday Dance.") For Georgia, a good version to start with might be Ethel Waters singing it in C major with a good band in 1939 (on Youtube). Or there are dozens of other great versions. Better though not to start with Billie Holiday or Ray Charles, where you're getting a very personal and stylised treatment. First get the basic tune.

    It's a long process.

    Nick Motz -

    Go to www.wikifonia.org.
Type: Georgia in the title block, click enter.
You'll get three copies in different keys, two w/ words & one w/o.

All will have the melody line in standard notation w/ chord symbols.

Click on the word TRANSPOSE in the upper right hand corner and you can put it into any key you want.

    Good luck and enjoy,
    Lee

Great! It'll be worth the while. Thanks for your guidance, I'm not very erudite in the field of music.
