Doug Edwards at http://hillcountrystringworks.com makes some cool ones that you could add on to your mando.

Since it was mentioned in one of te responses, is there a need for a pick guard? I am just wondering because it seems to me that the strings are set so high above the body that the risk of hitting it with the pick is negligible. To me, the pick guard seems to be an aesthetic piece. I am just curious.

The pick guard is more correctly described as a finger rest, since that was, and for some of us still is, its intended role.

    And they look great!

A new-to-the-forum picker posts a photo of his loar 600, clearly excited about it. Then, a not-new-to-the-forum picker posts a photo of his mandolin, clearly excited about it.

I don't understand that. The 2nd guy should start his own thread, no?

Why not just post a picture of your mando and spread the love...

I surely would (and have), but not in a thread started by a guy on his particular mandolin.

    But, that's just me.

    Agree.

I've been seeing increasing amounts of this from a small select group of members and we'll not tolerate it further. If it pains someone too much to see someone happy about their mandolin it's probably time to log off and find something else to do on the internet with your time.

I like the '59 Chevy in the background. Might be a '60 though. Can't see the tail lights or grill.

aesthetic - maybe. i'm pretty careful about wielding my pick but do notice that scuff marks tend to build up after a while. what decided me against it was the idea of boring a hole (shudder) into the side of my "precious" that's needed to anchor the pick-guard to the mandolin.

i posted the picture of the black LM600 simply to show they exist - it ain't mine (would that it was ...)

Sorry boys, my bad. I misunderstood the purpose of the thread, I thought that it was just a thread to express how much we appreciated our particular mandolins. I didn't realize that the post was more aimed at a particular brand. Apologies.

I finally got a chance to try out some of the Loars in person on Saturday, and of all of them the 600 had the best neck I thought. All really well built mandolins!

I'm missing something here. Increasing amounts of what, exactly?

We got Lil John's festival coming up in May, right in your neck of the woods. You should bring your loar 600 to Bluegrass Ridge some saturday night, would like to check it out. It's in Liberty, off Williams Dairy Road.

My tutor advised me to remove it (from a low end Stagg mando)as resting my finger on it would overtime push it onto soundboard and deaden the tone. I think it looks better without it, but was his reasoning correct?

If your technique is such that you're applying so much pressure on the pickguard that you're actually moving it, I'd say modify your technique.
