Default Standard strings for a Mandolin

I know that strings are a subject of discussion quite often on the site. That some like a certain gauge for each of the strings, or that wound-flat versus wound-round.

I also find that strings that 'come with' a new mandolin may not be of a specific quality, etc.

But, what is considered the standard gauge string set for a mandolin?

From what I've seen, in my little experience, is that a lot of people use the D'Addario J74s. Many of the other strings seem to have similar gauges (give or take a thousandth or two). Found the sizes in the description on juststrings.com. Hopefully that helps with your question.

It really depends on the type of mandolin. Most modern mandolins can take D'Addario J-74s or equivalent. However some vintage instruments should be strung lighter and vintage bowlbacks usually use extra-light strings.
