Had to resurrect this thread in true Druidic fashion...

Saw the performance below from the 2009 Glastonbury Festival on the Palladia network tonight, and was pretty much blown away by it. Outstanding in so many ways.

What really makes Spinal Tap work - the movie and the music - in addition to the brilliant writing, is they really can play. True, the songs wobble along the fine line between real and satire, and overall they are really surreal (for real ), but since they can play it straight if they are of a mind to, they surpass the strictures of satire. Here is an entire concert from 1992 - at the Royal Albert Hall, no less - with some other stuff (natch) and much of the time, if you don't know it's all a joke and/or don't think about it too much, you can have a rocking good time. Check out the unplugged section, which features some mandolin and singing "a capellini" at 1:02.

Christopher Guest has a Monte! He played a Collings in the Mighty Wind movie, this was my favorite song from that movie.

I played "Stonehenge" for a cake walk at an intermission for a contradance on Saturday night. How random!

At least something like this never came to pass:

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilization in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks. The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very bad if drums stop." The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!" The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! Very bad!" The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?" Wide-eyed, the boy responds, " . . . BASS SOLO!!!"

Right! Multiply that by 15 and ... yikes!

    I have seen that & it's a favorite.
    And I've shared it too.
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?

I've heard this with a variation, but the same punchline--as a bass player as well, I am amused.
