Default Coolest use of a mandolin orchestra I have seen

Just found this the other day and hadn't seen it here yet. This guy is apparently a well known Canadian folk artist and his newest project uses the Upper York Mandolin Orchestra as a backing band for some folkish songs. It's pretty awesome if you ask me.

Kevin Breit is a big deal in Canada, especially in the Toronto area, where he lives. There's a lot of mandolin and mando-family instruments on his albums.

One of the nicest examples of him just playing a tune on the mandolin is "Lost Dog" from his recording "Maybelle". You can listen to it on his website. It's very catchy.

Field Recording is awesome ... Kevin sent me a pre-release copy and I really dig it.

Thanks for sharing. Some of the songwriting is pretty good. The recording, though, is pretty ... mediocre. I hope he finds a good sound engineer pretty soon. On "There is a Girl," for example, in the chorus and in the end, the sound gets all Mississippi-River-muddy. It's very annoying. But this guy definitely has talent, and of course I appreciate the mandolins.

Very Cool. Kevin Breit is a pretty well known session guitarist. He played with Norah Jones for awhile as well as Cassandra Wilson, Marc Jordan and Hugh Laurie of 'House' fame. He mostly plays guitar but also mandolin, mandola and a number of other stringed instruments.

Breit has a new double album out. Disc One is called Ernesto. Liner notes say "it is fully instrumental and is bold with classic Brazilian sounds and atmosphere, with styles ranging from classical to jazz. Ernesto features some stellar performances from the Upper York Mandolin Orchestra and features guest appearances from Cyro Baptista on percussion and Gregoire Maret on Harmonica."

The second disc, Delilah, is all duets with vocalist/actress Rebecca Jenkins. Liner notes say "The 11 original tracks on Delilah are the stuff dreams are made of - highlighting the ethereal vocals of Breit and Jenkins as well as Breit’s mastery if his instruments and exceptional storytelling. "
