Thread: the mammals

    Just saw these guys play, they're pretty wild, definitely breaking new ground, like old-time rock or something. I got to jam with them some after they came down to an old-time jam at a bar down the street (Morgantown,WV). No mandolin, but good stuff nonetheless. The fiddle/banjo uke playing chick in the band is something else...

    That would be Ruth Ungar, and she is great! I haven't seen her with the Mammals yet, but have enjoyed her appearances with the Jay Ungar and Molly Mason band. She is not only great on her instruments but sings well also. She does a wonderful version of Hank Williams "I'm so lonesome I could cry" on a concert anthology CD I have. Her father Jay of "Ashokan Farewell" fame is every bit as good on the mandolin as he is on fiddle.

    And one of the other guys in the Mammals is the grandson of Pete Seeger (or Mike. Not entirely sure)...great bloodlines in that group. They do a really great live show. Encourage everyone to check them out if you get the chance...

    I saw them 2 years ago and your right, the fiddle player burned it up.
