Thread: Any love for Martin MSP4460 mandolin strings?

Default Any love for Martin MSP4460 mandolin strings?

I'm auditioning different strings for my recently acquired Collings MT-O and was wondering if anyone has experience with these Martin SP PB mandolin strings. Unlike many others, I've never warmed to the J-74's that so many other players like. BTW I'm more into jazz than bluegrass.
Any other string suggestions welcomed .

    Thanks
    Kelly

I would definitely recommend elixir strings. They are a bit pricy compared to other strings, but are worth the extra cost!

What is an MSP4460? read off the envelope back... wound with? string thicknesses in decimal fractions? tell more..

I Put some D'Addario FW74s on my Lebeda 'Jazzica' the A and E Are plain, the G, D ribbon flat wound .. nickel-steel alloy.

their FT 74 is flat top , Bronze, round wound then half flattened by machining.. the A is also wound, so core wire is thin.

you either need a light touch or expect to put a plain A on soon. as the core wire will break,

(you can install a plain A on, in the1st place, but you have to get the single As separately)

or perhaps Just a Lighter gage round wound will be fine..J73 a .010" E

Vs the .011 E of the 74.. the pitch is reached with less tension ,
because the string (physics) is thinner..
[the other 6 are a few thousandths thinner too]

Very similar in feel and tone to J74's. Good quality strings. Unwound pairs are, somewhat unusually, bronze coated.

Seem to last about the same as J74's too. I picked up a dozen sets some months ago in a blowout sale, and have tried them with good results on several mandolins. I'd buy them again (at the right price!).

Try the GHS silk and bronze, very nice and cheaper than the Elixir's.

Anyhow Mandolin strings are not the investment, of Violin strings, play what's handy,
    next time Try something else.

one brand of Bronze round-wound strings, all things being equal, gage wise,
wont be night and day different from another .
