Hi, the best way to get to understand you mandolin is DIY. One learns alot this way. I am self taught and came from mechanical engineering, didn't have a clue about music theory. But that did not keep me from all the digging and shovelling through material and theory. I am glad I did, and the journey never ends. The more one gets into it the more is to be discovered and interest in the subject and motivation builds constantly.

Only one problem, it is either theory or playing. And mostly I favour playing. Well, scales etc are a compromise,....

    Enjoy.

Many thanks Werner. Mechanical engineering? No Surprise. You can have a very technical discussion on picking patterns and rhythms. As for playing? I can only say I favour that - but tend to run before I can walk. <smile> Many thanks

I am not quite sure what the question is. Do you want to know how to use a piece of software like TEF to make tabs or do you want to learn music theory so that you can write down the notes?

If you want to learn basic music theory and get some mandolin lessons thrown in (as well as banjo and bluegrass guitar picking) then, as I have already mentioned, Banjobenclark.com is really good.

He spends a lot of time going over counting and very basic scale theory. Being a piano player, I know all this stuff so I find it very slow but I can see the value of what he is doing for someone who doesn't know these things. At $5 a month, it's a bargain.

Hi Bluenote: it is about the writing of music notation. Fortunately I have perfect pitch so I can hear the chords and deconstruct them and also my rhythm isn't too far off.

.... Sorry am even a greater novice than you are with music theory, but the mandolin will help me pick it up. Played some violin, piano and recorder before, even Oeboe.

    Now this is interesting.

Doing all the mentioned above but you don't know about writing music notation ? And how about reading notation ?

Simply learning music theory and notation is independent from the mandolin.

It is rather simple and easily done.

This is a drawing I did when I started with my first mandolin. I had it always in front of me. Now I don't need it any more. It is all in my head and to determin any key or scale is quite easy now. " fat cats go down alleys eating birds" and "battle ends and down goes charles father". Mnemonics. One needs to memorize the Circle of Fifths , intervals and harmonies etc. Voilą. And the ingenious fretboard of the mandolin makes it easy.

this is a great little tool.

But surely, all this can't be new to you. What exactly are you looking for ?

    you are welcome, poniverus

What do you mean by " ASAP" ? Do you mean ASAP Bluegrass Mandolin by Ediie Collins ? I looked through my edition and found no such picture or arrangement. I did this long before I bought any book or cd. Anyway, if anybody thinks this is handy, help yourself.

I am planning to do another with the 3rds and 5ths laid out, the Circle of Fifths scheme on the fretboard. For my own understanding.

I just meant I would be printing it as soon as possible, or whenever I had access to a printer.
