    Default Hammerschmidt (1636): Padouan & Ballet à 5

Andreas Hammerschmidt (1611-1675): Neuer Paduanen, Galliarden, Balletten, Mascharaden, françoischen Arien, Courenten und Sarabanden

    1. Padouan à 5 (Part 2, No. 3, "Ander Theil") - 0:00
    2. Ballet à 5 (Part 1, No. 39, "Erster Fleiß") - 2:29

Andreas Hammerschmidt was a German early Baroque composer, mainly of vocal music. His surviving instrumental work is mainly in two volumes of dance suites for five instruments, published in 1636 and 1639. Here are two movements from these collections, a Padouan (Pavan) from the second volume and a ballet from the first volume.

I got the idea of looking at Hammerschmidt's compositions from an old posting on the Cafe saying that the Dayton Mandolin Orchestra (in their "Miami Valley Mandolin Quintet" incarnation) have three of his padouans in their repertoire. No idea whether this includes the one I have picked, but I liked the luscious harmonies of the padouan and the catchy rhythm of the ballet (look out for the step change from cut time to 3/2).

Scores are attached, as downloaded from IMSLP:
