    Default Help with inlay decision

Hello again everyone, while I'm getting my frets replaced I'd like to consider some customer fret board inlays, such as the vine look, etc.

Can you all recommend a reputable dealer in quality inlays?

Do you recommend a certain type?

Are there any downsides, such as affect on tone?

    Thank you!
    Patrick

DePaule Supply has what you are probably looking for. Scroll down almost to the bottom to the vine/treeof life inlays.

The only downside I can think of is affecting resale value. It will cost you something tho I doubt you would recoup that cost.

Inlay work is very time consuming, its not hard but it takes quite a bit of time to implement, time = money. A tree of life up the fretboard could cost you around 400 plus dollars easily

I find it hard to see where I am when there is lots of inlay on the fetboard. I like to keep it simple, but that is just my preference.

I had a friend that had a vine like inlay on his guitar fingerboard and after a short period of time some of it popped out, I guess the glue wasn`t the right kind and also that is only one case in point but might be something to be considered....

I have used a company called Precision Pearl in Austin, TX. They do great inlay work.

    Then there's this, for a non-permanent version: http://www.inlaysticker.com/

Never tried them, never seen them (that I know of), and no financial or other interest in them, but it is a possibility. You could see how you like it before committing to the real deal.

It would limit the resale potential to those who like it and I don't know if you would recoup the cost, as others have said. It should not affect the tone of the instrument. If you want it, get it and worry about resale at a later date. It won't hurt resale nearly as much as having a big signature by X player across the front.
