Thread: Have you seen a new mandolinetto lately?

Default Have you seen a new mandolinetto lately?

The soundboard is Sitka spruce; body, sides and neck are mahogany; fretboard and tuning head faceplate are Indian rosewood. The one-piece, asymmetrical, compensated bridge is ebony. It has a great sustain and bright tone with light gage strings. It is on loan to me by my friend luthier John Kinnard of Fallbrook, CA. http://www.johnkinnard.com/Click image for larger version.

Really nice-looking box -- it begs for swing!!

John Kinnard had made the box about 10 yrs ago but it's just now that he dug it out of his backburner bin and decided to complete the instrument. He made it simple but he could have easily put elaborate bindings and purflings and used curly maple for back and sides. It is for sale.

I prefer instruments clean and to the point, myself.

That is gorgeous, and perfectly executed. His other work is quite interesting, as well.

Very nice. I like the simplicity. I assume that the top has some induced arch to it, not like the Howe-Ormes, tho?

I have never seen or heard of a mandolietto. How is it tuned? Mandolins are great instruments and it's interesting how many variations have been created. Some day I want a five (or ten) string mandolin.

Assuming it is the same scale length it should be tuned like a mandolin.

It is still a mandolin; the only difference is its guitar-shaped body. As such, the scale is 13-7/8" and tuned GDAE.

Boni, do you know how much this instrument is being offered for? I didn't see it on the link you posted earlier.

As is, $1K. John Kinnard can easily build another one with the customer's choice of woods and appointments. E-mail him for this one or another one to build at sales@johnkinnard.com
