Default Give me a harumph - embed your videos please

Feel free to post your personal harumph if you're tired of videos not embedded into the forum vs. people simply providing a link. I tire quickly of people posting videos that force me to leave the site to view something I really did not want to see.

    Advantages of embedding:
You don't have to leave the site.
If a video has been removed--and they often are--you won't be duped into clicking a link into YouTube or Vimeo with a "this video has been removed" notice.
You get a visual idea of what the video is actually about instead of someone tricking you into some crummy video you won't be interested in.
Respectful of your fellow forum members.
Less time wasted, more time for practicing (riiiiight)
Someone might actually watch the video. I typically won't unless it's embedded. YMMV.

Yes, there are sometimes reasons for not embedding, but 95% of the time around here it's because folks decided it was beyond their ability without even trying. Please...

Instructions - people, it's really not that hard

Video tutorial (not embedded on purpose)
    Written instructions

So, do you want to see:

    this

    or this?

I think people may get confused and frustrated posting videos because there are 2 ways to do it, one in the Quick Reply and another in the Go Advanced view, and they are both different, and won't work if you put in one thing what you would have put in the other.

If you're doing it in Quick Reply you have to post the whole URL to your video, and if you're doing it in Go Advanced with the YouTube icon you have to post just the code, and if you get it wrong in either case it won't work.

I agree, it's not hard, but it's likely to confuse the uninitiated.

    Plus, they look different:
    1. Embedded with Movie button in quick reply:

    2. Embedded using the YouTube button in Go Advanced:

My point is there are people willing to spend thousands of hours a year on the web, but watching a 3 minute video or reading a tutorial to educate themselves is something most won't do--both of which point out there is an incorrect way to do it that will work--as long as those video hosting companies don't change their coding practices. Everything else is just a bit of whine with the cheese, which this post is sure to bring on.

Nice mando playing in that video!

I like the embedded videos as it's just plain easier for the user to see them here on the cafe. I think it's quicker than going to another website too.

Thank you Pete. Yes, but Scott.... your video doesn't cover the simplest way to post a video, which is to use the Video Icon in the quick reply and paste the whole URL. And the incorrect way doesn't work any more.

My point is that if you've got a certain way of doing things and you've given it a good long try and people aren't getting it, it may not be the people who are the problem.

I cannot view the poorly done links on my phone, it gives me a broken link (like Old Sausage link #1 does here).

As my video watching time is most often while waiting in the car to pick up my kid at school ... A majority of links here will not function in any sense for me.

There are reasons to follow Scott's advice beyond those he listed.

Yes, there are very good reasons to follow Scott's advice. The most important one being that he's asked us to.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me. I don't make videos and seldom if ever refer to them in my posts. But I'd rather see a link. So far in this thread space is taken up by the same video posted twice and two others that didn't actually have to be here to make the original point (although it was neat to see the differences noted). I get tired of scrolling through long pages faster than I tire of clicking links, but that's just me.

    Oh yeah, I forgot: Harumph.

Another small harrumph to threads based on eBay or other sales sites where people don't post any images but just link to the site. Ebay takes them down after a month or so. The threads are often useless without some picture references.

Whoa, WOW! Wait - that clip didn't go the whole 12:12 for me, it stopped just after they got into the second thing (after the Bach part). Man, what a pair of musicians . . .

Harumph! Thanks, Scott, I'll do my best to comply from here out!

Seriously harumph. When its just a link I am likely going to read on. If you want others to see it, make it easy for them.

OK Scott, I was trying to cut back but if you insist, henceforth I will try to abide and imbibe.

Oh dread it, you said embed it?

I could be persuaded there too, depending on what she looks like.

    What was the question ?
