    Hey guys

I bought a mandolin recently and i'm teaching myself some of my favorite led zeppelin songs that use one (going to california and the battle of evermore). I'm also figuring out R.E.M. losing my religion.

I am in love with this instrument and want to know places where I can download and try to play along with good music. It can be in a rock song or a solo mandolin playing. I am just looking for GOOD mandolin sounds.

I already know about, and enjoy, Mickey Cochran (sample below)

    THANKS!

    Brian

The mandolincafe's own multi-genre MP3 page here is a great place to explore what others are doing on the mandolin.

Thanks. I've checked a few of those out. Is this the best out there? I guess i'm looking for something different. Are there songs on the radio using mandolins or are there songs that push the instrument to a new level/sound?

    Brian,
check out anything from Sam Bush. He's can really rock and I think thats what you are looking for. He also plays the heck out of the electric 4 string mando. I dont know about downloads but his cds are available anywhere fine music is sold. good luck

If you are looking for something totally different, a few artists that come to mind are Mandolin Jazz Quartet, U. Srinivas (electric mandolinist playing classicial Indian music), and Shooglenifty (esp. their very experimental Solar Shears). Also, Michael Kang plays a 5-string electric mandolin (which kinda sounds like a guitar) with jam band String Cheese Incident.

jazz mandolin project- for funky improv and a little space thrown in jamie m. is as different as it gets!, old string band blues stuff (yank rachell, carl martin, johnny young, howard armstrong, etc...), new blues dudes (big jack johnson), ry cooder (into the purple valley), left over salmon- drew e. is amazing-cajun,rock, newgrass! railroad earth (john s. -0ne of my favs), someone already mentioned string cheese incident if you are looking for rockin electric, and sam b. for the best of everything from bluegrass to reggae and more! david grisman- jazz, blues, swing, latin, rock- its all just dawg music. radim z. if you want intense speed with precision and melody. andy statman for a little bit of klezmer-jazz-bluegrass, nickel creek and any chris t. stuff is great and certainly modern in sound, and there are so many others.......(nash the slash anyone). hey spruce- send this guy a mandolin graffiti taster-

Check out the Green Cards. Their mandolinist, Kym Warner, is terrific and their songs are really good.

2 thumbs up for Sam Bush. Many different styles, his own unique sound, not afraid to let his band members shine.
