Default Squirrel of Possibility - from the new P-Bros EP

OK now. Who wants to help figure this one out. It's Paul Kowert's original tune off the Punch Brothers' Ahoy! EP

The melody is reasonably straight forward. It's in G and goes to a-minor and b-minor. If I get the chords and timing figured out, I'll share them.

The tune starts at about 1:10 here:

I am entranced by this tune. I like the purity of this off-the-cuff take better than the EP version, though that one's really nice too. I am planning on learning this as well.

That's awesome! I have to say that Ahoy is one of the best things they have ever put out. If this is the direction the Punch Brothers are going the future is bright.

I think it's more like a reminder LP that they do covers and slightly more tradtional stuff when they feel like it, sort of like the DVD in the deluxe version of Antifogmatic

I discovered this song by stumbling across this same video. It's a definite earworm for me. I go to sleep hearing it! I'm almost done tabbing out the solo rendition of it:

I just purchased Tabledit yesterday and am still learning to use it, but I've run into an issue I'm hoping someone on this board can help with. This is my first attempt at transcribing bluegrass and I tabbed out the tune in sixteenth notes. Only now, too late, do I realize that it should be eighth notes. I've looked through the Tabledit manual and can't find a way to "scale up" the notes. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Or will I have to re-tab it?

I don't know the answer to your tabledit question, but I'm eager to see your transcription!

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to globally scale note durations, so I re-tabbed it with eighth notes. It's easier to read now! Doing this was a good exercise since I was able to simplify the transcription. Here is a slightly abridged version. The outro has been cut short to keep it simple and within two pages.

    The basic outline:
    Intro, A, B, Interlude, A, B, Turnaround, B, Outro, End Harmonics

Intro, Interlude and Outro are all what I call the "400 roll".

Looks very challenging, but I love this tune. Thanks so much for sharing your transcription!

Here's an updated unabridged version of the transcription, which includes the full Outro. The notes were correct in the last one but I was never able to get the phrasing right. Last night I watched the Mandolin Brothers video again and noticed Chris Thile using open strings (the "059") for the main melody, similar to how he plays "Hop the Fence".

It sounds much better if you play it this way
