    Default help identify

Can someone help identify this mandolin? It looks like is says Javier inside of the label but it's difficult to actually see so I'm not absolutely sure. Is this made in Mexico? I know nothing about these types of instruments. The holes in front look like they may have been drilled. But it still looks and feels like it was well built. One of the strings need to be replaced and it needs to be tuned I assume. Any help would be appreciated. Here are some pictures. Thank you.

I believe you've got a Charango there. I don't know much about them but others who do will surely chime in soon.

I'd change "ALL" the strings if I were you and tune it GDAE!

That is not a charango. Those generally have 10 strings and are string with gut, usually have glued on bridges like a guitar or uke. It looks like some sort of Spanish bandurria variant, with that short neck. You could tune it to guitar tuning and it might work nicely that way. Might be harder to tune in fifths.

If the strings in each course (group of three) are the same size, it is probably a tricordia.
If they are different sizes, it is probably a mandriola.

Does this have strings arranged three to a course? As far as worth, I would say not a fortune. if it is rosewood, might be worth more than another stained wood. It also depends on if it is playable. Prob worth what you paid for it (hopefully)

    Where did you get it?

Paracho-made tricordias apparently sell for $65-100. Never seen one with f-holes, but hey, it's a big world...

yes, it's 3 strings for each post. I found it at my local goodwill store. It was just a few dollars. I thought it looked cool so I bought it to display on my wall.
