Default I need some information from the group....1962 or so Bill Monroe

I am working on a tape that has Carl Payne and Darrel York playing banjo and fiddle. I am trying to date the tape.. Jimmie Maynard is on guitar so I believe that it is either 1962 or 1963......went to the web site of all the BG boys and these two aren't there.....tried to click on the contact button and it won't let me send a message to the owner of the site...

So I would like to know the date of when Maynard, Payne and York were playing so I can therefore date the tape......my father didn't leave any notes on this tape. So I know that it is Bean Blossom (of course) but nothing else gives me much of a clue.

On that site, Maynard is listed as 1961.

Frank Bucannan was pretty much most of 1962. Maynard in there at most of 1961, a short while in '62 and again a short stint in '64 so your tape could be any of those 3 years. As far as the other 2 guys sounds like they are just one night pick ups that didn't even make the fill in list. There are dozens like this that didn't make the list for their one or two night stands with Monroe. James Randolph from SC is another one that didn't make the list. I assume Bessie Lee is on bass. Since Maynard is still living and has lots of memory left in him I would contact him direct and ask about those guys and the date.

    Gary,
I think I might have logged that tape. See if this sound right.

Not sure about the spelling on York's name. This must have come from the tape box.

60 hertz hum on original of this tape.. I notched out 60 hertz in cassettes.
Bobby Hicks & Joe Stuart: Fiddles
    Recorded by: Mr. Hedrick
    Notes say:
“Brown Co Jamboree 7-1-56, Roger Smith fiddle, Carlos Brock guitar, Bob Hicks guitar, Joe Stuart Banjo, Noel Crace Banjo, Glen Smith mandolin, Jack Noel Bass.” Then they say “Bill Birch & Charlie Monroe at Jamboree 55 or 56”. This is in ink, in pencil are a few random notes, maybe the original ones “Good Twin Fiddling”, “TFR”, “Brown Co Jam” and “11-6-55”.

Tape opens up with a cowboy’s sweetheart, sounds like Vassar Clements licks on fiddle.
Clearly this is not the first show on the tape. The first show is Monroe with what sounds like Bobby Hicks & Joe Stuart twining fiddles. Great twin fiddles!

After about 10 minutes the show sounds like the Roger Smith band listed in the notes.

    List:
    56’
Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys
    Misc. Local Performers
    1. Lonesome Road Blues
    2. I’m Just a Use To Be To You (Travis style Joe Stuart on guitar)

    11. Good Morning To You (Charlie Monroe)
    12. Find a Fool & And Leave Him Alone (Charlie Monroe)
    13. Devil’s Little Angel

    Bill, Charlie, and Birch Monroe
    1. When The Angels Carry Me Home
    2. Just a Little Talk With Jesus
    3. Angels Rock Me To Sleep

This section sounds like Benny Martin, Jesse McReynolds, and a woman, maybe Melissa Monroe (Thinking of You). Either this is a very young Jesse McReynolds, and company or some better then average jammers. It also sounds to me (Jim Moss) that the recording was made outside as there is no room ambience. The recording sounds like it was made outside of the old Bean Blossom barn.
    1. Dear Old Dixie (with two banjos)
    2. Bluegrass Breakdown (with two banjos)
    3. It’s a Shame (big guitar sound)
    4. Little Maggie
    5. Blue Suede Shoes
    6. I’ll Still Write Your Name In The Sand
    7. Call Me Lonesome
    8. Are You Missing Me (now this sounds like a jam with Jessie ??)
    9. Me and My Fiddle (could this be Benny Martin? It sounds like it.)
    10. Tutti-Frutti
    11. Old Joe Clark
    12. Searching
    13. No One But You (woman singer)

Here we have the twin fiddle band again… It is ended with a radio show sign off.

    1. Little Georgia Rose (Bill Monroe)
    2. Girl In The Blue Velvet band (Bill Monroe)
    3. Footprints In The Snow (Bill Monroe)
    4. Put My Little Shoes Away (Bill Monroe)
    5. Swing Low (Bill Monroe)

    7. Wheel Hoss (Bill Monroe)
    8. Down Yonder (Bill Monroe)
    9. Mother’s Not Dead (Bill Monroe)
    10. Roanoke with radio signoff

They invite Silver Spur (Denzel Ragsdale) up to talk or sing..
This is a great tape for the simple reason that has Kenny Baker doing Comedy & Singing

This tape noise is high on the second show… this is due to a very low signal level on tape for that show. There was some sort of transformer problem as indicated by Hedrick working on the system while the machine is running.

    Panhandle Country
    ?
    In Despair
