Default JIm & Jesse, I Will Always Be Waiting Chords

I've always dug this tune - the chorus is just so catchy. Planning on woodshedding it a bit this weekend and introducing it to my jam group/sometimes band next week. Just wondering if anyone else does this one, and if so, what chord changes do you use? Here's what I worked up really quickly this morning. I used G because it was a comfortable key to sing in.

    G................................................. .................D
It's been many weeks my dear since you told me
    G................................................. .....C
That you loved me so dearly and so true
    G................................................. ......D
But today it seems to me you have changed dear
    ...............C.......................D.......... .......G
For you're telling me that our love is through

    (Chorus)

    ..........C....................................... ...G
When you're far, far away from me darling
    .................................................. ..............C
If you're sad and you don't know what to do
    .................................................. ..G
And you feel that no one cares about you
    .....C.....................D...............G
I will always be waiting for you

Not quite sure about the change back to the I chord in the second line. Any feedback is appreciated.

PLayed it for the guys last night and their was consensus that something is off with my chord changes, but it was right at the end of the jam and no one knew the song very well, so I'll go back to working on it.

    Hi Alex,

Their original version was in the key of F, here's the progression in numbers so you can put it anywhere:

    Verse:

    I I I I
    I I IV IV
    V V V V
    V V I I

    Chorus:

    IV IV I I
    I I IV IV
    V V V V
    V V I I

And a transcription of Jesse's amazing solo from that recording, crosspicking in the key of F!

    Jordan,

Thanks so much for the corrections there. Indeed, that is the way it goes, though I kind've like the idea of punching out the last line of the verse and chorus with the IV-V-I combination. That said, I'm going to stick to the "correct" version for now, though I found I sing it best in D. Awesome transcription by the way.

    Hi Alex,

No worries, glad to help. The chart was part of my collection, and after looking it over just now, realized that I messed up the grammar in the title. For my own piece of mind, here's the corrected version.

On a related note, I got to meet Jesse for the first time this past weekend at RockyGrass. He still sounds amazing at 83, both his vocals and picking. After the show, I went to the record table to say hi and introduce myself. After telling him that I studied his style with Jack and Raymond at ETSU, I asked if I could crosspick for him a little bit. He graciously agreed and I played his solo from "Are You Missing Me" while he and the band signed autographs. All were really accommodating and complimentary, it was a great experience. I must say, I haven't been that nervous since the contest at Winfield last year. He was very sweet, said "I can't pick it fast like that anymore". He certainly can, sounded amazing on stage. I'm so greatful to have met my absolute mandolin hero, it was truly a highlight of my life. Here's to many more years of good health and great picking from the Crosspicking Master!
