    Default JazzMando 3-string Jazz Chords

Looking at the posts, there seems to be a nice relationship between the jazzmando folk and the mandoCafe people in these posts…so I’d like to ask some questions about theory brought up on page:

The page http://www.jazzmando.com/ii_v7_i_home_positions.shtml made the point that three note chords—all on the lower strings—was a worthwhile way to approach the mando because you could “use your pinky for the “funny business” of extended chords…”

The page goes on to specify (Major Patterns) three three-note chords (top string “x’d” out) and then goes on to specify 15 more unique chord positions using all four strings.

Question: I thought the whole idea of this page’s train of thought was to specify 3-note chords. Are the last 15 chords a continuation of the “three-note chord” theme, with the 4th string a suggested completion of the chord, or what?

    Thanks

Look at Jethro Burns Complete mandolin, a Mel Bay Publ.
he has block diagrams of some useful 3 string chords in the back of his book.

benefit i think is the 3 string groups nearby
    offer a relative chord .. to go down a 4th, up a 5th..

5 string .. play The root , as the middle 3 .. so 4,1,5 on same fret..
