Default A song that moves you.

You know what I mean. If you are a music freak like me, you have come across many songs that influence you in some way. Maybe you want to learn to play it, sing it, or rewrite it, or could be a hundred different ways that this song affects you. I remember the song "My Girl" when I had my first girlfriend. Then later "Help me make it thru the Night". Alright you get the picture? Well, I just had a song tear me up. This started about a month ago when I heard for first time "Karla Faye". Nothing too special, but something about the simple melody stuck and a couple days later I wanted to play it. The more I played the melody, the more interest in the lyrics. The lyrics led me to the true story behind it. It is a very touching story if you look at the lyrics. That led to story. Then comes the haunting, and then, when I really started analyzing the lyrics of Mary Gauthier, the melody, the flow and the singing ability of Audrey Mazera to emphasize the impact of sadness, then came the tears. IMO Mazera sings it better than Mary, but it is only available to listen to on Spotify. Mary's version is on utube. Anyway, while I wipe away my tears.... I think I'll write a song and call it, "A 66 year old man ain't suppose to cry".

I've been in a Darrell Scott frame of mind for past 2-3 months. Right now it's I'll Be With You All The Way from his new recording called Long Ride Home. I have only recently discovered his music and find I'm moved by just about everything - the lyrics, the voice to the playing, he's the whole package. I really believe you have to see him perform live (and solo) to "get" him as I did a couple of years back at Wintergrass.

Many years ago I heard Charlie Pride sing a song called "All I Have To Offer You Is Me", I liked the song but it never really moved me until a few weeks ago I heard a young lady on the Country Family Reunion do it and she really put some feeling into it and it moved me quite a bit, I didn`t cry though...There is also a nice song called "A Bible And A Belt" which has a great story behind it that tells two ways to bring your children up, I got the belt a little more than the Bible although Momma Tried (which is another song that can get to you)...Another song that made me sit up and really listen the first time I heard it was "To Old To Die Young" by Moe Bandy....

    Karla Faye, The Lyrics

    A little girl lost,
    her world full of pain.
    He said it feels good,
    She gave him her vein.
    The dope made her numb
    and numb felt like free.
    Until she came down,down,down
    To a new misery.

    A junkie a whore,
    living for the next high.
    She'd lie cheat and steal,
    She forgot how to cry.
    Wide awake for two weeks,
    shooting heroin then speed,
When she killed in cold, cold blood
all she felt was her need.

    CHORUS
It's an eye for an eye,
    Now you're gonna die
    A tooth for a tooth,
    It's your moment of truth.
    There's no mercy here
    Your stay is denied
    Go on and pray,pray,pray
    There's Mercy in the sky.

    Alone in her cell,
    no dope in her veins.
    The killer'd become,
    little girl lost again.
    She fell to her knees.
    She prayed she would die.
    On the cold cement floor,
    she finally cried.

And love came like the wind
    Love whispered her name.
It reached through and held her
    lifted her pain.
    15 years on death row,
    her faith deeper each day.
Her last words were "I love you all,"
    Good-bye, Karla Faye.

Now it's an eye for an eye,
    And you're gonna die
    A tooth for a tooth,
    It's your moment of truth.
    There's no mercy here
    Your stay is denied
    Go on and pray,pray,pray
You will find mercy..... in the sky

Profound lyrics, the meaning of which I find more affecting with each passing year. Also, on an emotional level, I find the musical structure of this song to be almost perfect.

From the Irish repertoire, There Were Roses by Tommy Sands gets me every time. My partner sings it and I join the harmony on the chorus...if I can still sing by that time.

I've always found this one to be powerful too. Truthfully, it scared the hell out of me for 19 years, then I quit drinking so much. The guitar really does weep here as well as any other example one might cite.

On a separate note, will the Punch Brothers top their cover of Radiohead's "Kid A" by doing "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict?" http://social.zune.net/bingplayer/?v...6form%3DDTPMUZ A primal take on the origins and meaning of music if ever there was one.

I decided last night that there is no better explanation of why I love to stay up late and be alone than this song (Portrait of Tracy by Jaco Pastorious)

That is a great song. I first heard it at a festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it really moved me. Even if you are not particularly political, or familiar with the history, the song itself stands on its own.

Threads like this sometimes surprise me. I see everyone's most moving tune and I have to admit my first response is usually "who are all these people and why do I have coffee with them every morning?". All of our tastes and experience are so diverse, I am glad we have enthusiasm for the same musical instrument to keep us together.

What moves us is all over the map. I would not have thought that this is so subjective.

I suppose a song whose lyrics recount a scenario you have lived and can relate to has a real advantage in getting under your skin. And all of our experiences are so different.

Maybe if we looked for just a tune that moved us, some more universal answers would show up.

    I dunno.
